The Americans have given us our visas, so we can definitely, definitely join the insanely long list of bands playing at the CMJ Music Marathon next week. Now it’s all official, we can start to get excited.

It’s hard to know whether we’ll get many people turning up – it all seems a million miles away, and without an American record label there’s no real way of getting feedback. There have been a few people saying nice comments on our forum and this blog, and some nice bloggers like Music Snobbery and Chromewaves have been putting the word around, so hopefully we’ll get a few people through the doors. The new songs seemed to go down quite well at the warm-up gig last night, so we’re all set to go. Just one more warm-up (at King’s College, supporting Those Dancing Days on Tuesday night) and then get on the plane. Never mind that we still haven’t sorted out the equipment, we’ll figure something out.

Only a few more days to go before we go. Pancakes and maple syrup. Coffee and donuts. Pizza pie (whatever that actually means). Mom’s apple pie. Bagels and coffee from street vendors. Signs that say Walk Don’t Walk (although I heard that NYC has got rid of them now). Bring it on…

Coming out of the rain

Thanks to everyone who came to the gig at the Luminaire on Wednesday. Hope you enjoyed the new songs, and that you didn’t get too wet on the way home.

Thanks to The Understudies and Pop Martyr for providing able support, and to Andy from Pop Martyr for the biscuits.

Thanks also to Monster Bobby for coming down and spinning some discs, after his gig in Shoreditch was flooded out.

We’re looking forward to getting out and doing some more gigs once we’ve finished demoing the new songs.

So Zoo8 was a bit rubbish. Sorry if you tried to come and see us and arrived at the wrong time. We were on at 2.30, contrary to what the programme said. At least the sun was shining when we were there…

Our experience wasn’t so bad, although it was a struggle to get any money out of the promoters. We heard all kinds of rumours, such as Mark Ronson being paid in pound coins.

Zoo

Just a quick one to let y´all know some more information about our two imminent gigs…

This Saturday we´ll be playing at Zoo Thousand on the Suburban Kings Stage at 2:30pm. The programme has us incorrectly listed as playing at 5.40pm. We won´t be there then, so please come see and us at 2:30pm and say hello.

We´ve confirmed the supports for our London show at The Luminaire this coming Wednesday 9th July. There´s still a few tickets available which snap up here. Doors are at 7:30pm and you should get there on time to catch these two great bands:

First up there’s Pop Martyr, a cacophony of musical delights − riotous, chaotic, kinky and slinky, with influences including The Velvet Underground, Otis Redding and Jon Spencer, expect some horns and strings and some right raucous shenanigans. We found their drummer, Andy down the corridor at our new studio in Camberwell, the brother of Chris ´Beans´ Geddes from Belle & Sebastian, Andy is pure indie-pop pedigree, but more importantly he makes fantastic biscuits and we´re hoping he might bring some for the merch stand! And we´re very excited to have our dear old friends The Understudies join us as well. For those of you who remember Gifthorse, (they supported us at the ´Lips Are Unhappy´ single launch), The Understudies are the new and improved band, and an indie-pop gem they are too! Fronted by the Mozza-esque Brian and the beautiful girl-with-the-glock, Bree, their influences include Arab Strap, Anthony and the Johnsons, Siouxsie Sioux and of course the afore mentioned Morrissey by the bucket load. From Camberwell to Kilburn (via Moscow)

We’re in the midst of packing for Russia, but we’ve just got time to let you know that tickets are now on sale for our gig at The Luminaire on Wednesday July 9th. We’re still in the process of sorting out the other bands who are going to play, but it should be a good one.

The Luminaire is definitely my favourite small venue in London, both to play at and to watch other bands. There are a few reasons for that:

The people who run it aren’t obviously evil, unlike the people who run some other London venues that shall remain nameless. They’ve given some thought to how a venue works, and they’ve designed the place around their ideas. The stage isn’t tiny, and there’s a dressing room that isn’t the toilet (although last time we played there, we had to share it with 12 women in spangly mini-dresses – I have my suspicions that it was them who drank all the beer on the rider that night). The sound and light are pretty good for the size of the venue, and there are signs all around the place telling people to keep quiet while the bands are on (I’m a bit of a fascist about that sort of thing). I don’t know anyone who says a bad word about the place – even Robbie Gee (the driver for our UK tour last autumn, ex-member of King Adora, and general rock’n'roll legend) has been known to wear one of their rather stylish t-shirts.

So anyway, the Luminaire is lovely, and I’m really looking forward to playing there again. Assuming we get back from Russia in one piece. We’ll keep you posted about how we get on over there…
